INDYpendence is HERE!

INDYpendence:Freedom to be YOU                     By Corey Sim

Welcome to INDYpendence the spot of independent film, music and the independent arts.  Unfortunately the word independent is being taken away in the film world by the studios.  From studio films claiming to be independent but having a huge budget and big name filmmakers and stars within the films. Here at INDYpendence I'll be showing the art of filmmaking plus listing what films are very

As well as other legendary filmmakers like Roger Corman,  Herschell Gordon Lewis, George A. Romero,  Kevin SmithWes Craven etc  Plus I'll be listing trailers and other fun stuff.  This will be separate from this page.

               TRUE INDEPENDENCE

What is true independence within the film world?  Well it isn't films that has big names stars in their films with a big budget.  A lot of the studios want people to believe that some of their films are independent just because they may have a certain tone to look to the films.  True independence is making films with out a huge budget or big name talent within the films.  No they rely on a good story to push their respective film.   Take Kevin Smith for instance. Smith really still stayed independent after all these years.  Smith's career took after he did the low budget comedy CLERKS.

Smith went on record in saying in the independent film Official Rejection if he submitted the film in this Era he believes it wouldn't have even got in any of the major film festivals. In this day and age it is harder to get into the major festivals due to them really catering to studio driven films and filmmakers. The three major in that of SUNDANCE, CANNES and TIFF have all lost their way in knowing what true independent film is. They push their festivals by bringing out major film stars. The truly independent are slowly being pushed aside for these festivals to fill their greedy pockets.  Take Quentin Tarantino & Robert       Rodriguez for instance. Both met each other at TIFF. Tarantino was presenting Reservoir Dogs and Rodriguez was presenting El Mariachi. This was back in 92'. Back then these festivals were all for independent cinema and it was about the films being presented and not about the stars coming out.  The studios are now trying to take over the internet and trying to kill true independent cinema.   Let me explain. Legendary filmmaker of independent cinema Lloyd Kaufman has spoke about this very subject for years.  The studios run everything from television to the movie theatres. They have all the power well us little guys try and fight kicking and screaming to get attention.  The net was once an even playing field at one time.  I'm adding a video link here on Mr. Kaufman speaking about Net Neutrality.

Lloyd Kaufman is co-founder of

TROMA Entertainment   a long side

Michael Herz. The production is one of the longest independent production running. Almost 40 years. Lloyd Kaufman and TROMA's claim to fame was in the form of a mop wielding Super Hero called the                                TOXIC AVENGER.   The Toxic Avenger is receiving a remake which will star Arnold  Schwarzenegger as Toxie.  Also there are rumours floating that John Travolta is set to be casted as a possible villain in the film.  If you take a look at Mr. Kaufman's IMDb page you will see just how busy this man is in the land of independent cinema., He works more then the quote on quote major stars and has more credits then they do as well. It shows his commitment to the wonderful world of indy film. I've actually had the honour of meeting Mr. Kaufman on more then one occasion.   He truly is a remarkable man as well as very humble and respectful to his fans. Its not often that you meet a creative filmmaking genius and their so down to Earth like Mr. Kaufman truly is.

FILM vs DIGITAL

Ah the on going debate on what's truly better. I'll tty my best to give my opinions on this subject.

Well when filmmakers back in the day got into the business it was easier to become successful due to there not being hundreds of cameras around and there was no internet. So this meant fewer people were doing it back in the day.  Now a days you can shoot a movie on any mobile devices and upload it to a video source within in minutes. So there is more pressure on indy filmmakers to push themselves harder then ever before.  The best part about digital though is you do have inexpensive equipment at your fingertips. Plus on digital it saves you money in the short as well as long run. Its very expensive to cut film. That's why its a dying medium. A few Indy filmmakers want to shoot on film because filmmakers like Tarantino and Nolan paint a pretty picture about it. But heres facts. They can afford to cut on film. A great percentage of us can't as Indy filmmakers. Yes its nostalgic. But that's all it really is. I mean Tarantino is putting "Shot in 70mm" in a trailer for his latest film The Hateful Eight. Your average movie going audience will NEVER care about cameras.  People(As well as critics) will talk about the films story.
